    1988 Black Lightning

I did some measuring of a couple of new “8” speed chains this past week. A Shimano and a Sram and I came to the conclusion they’d work fine for a 9 and maybe 10. So the reverse would probably work also. Thanks.

One bike out of the stand. Another one in. I hung some parts just for my own gratification. My ok set of bars arrived.

Quick spin through the neighborhood to check the new chain, clean, lube, tune, and different seat. All is well. Hope my Mrs. likes it….

    1988 Black Lightning

While at my LBS yesterday getting tools, I talked chains with one of the bike mechanics. Other than KMC, which isn’t an option like @kjop mentioned, he didn’t know of any makers of gold chains. I told the mechanic about my project. He‘d never heard of a Black Lightning. He is old enough, a bit...

    1988 Black Lightning

I sourced a Suntour Sprint 9000 derailleur set. They won’t have the gold color. But they’ll work. Chainrings I got are Suntour Superb pro (black). As of right now the only thing I’m lacking are brake cables. I don’t know interchangeability if any. And a gold chain of good quality. The only...

    1988 Black Lightning

Paint matching for touch ups is going to be difficult. And decals…well I’ve read enough on here to know that situation isn’t very good. But I don’t expect to be entering any “show and shine” events like a classic car. The idea is to go for a ride.

    1988 Black Lightning

The CAAD7 version was (my opinion) the pinnacle of The Black Lightning. If I’m not mistaken it is full Campagnolo. Each previous version had their own different set of components. The 88 was a mix of Suntour, Sugino and Dia-Compe. All with different levels of gold accents. Hope you get together...

A beginning. And in that beginning there was light. A heartbeat before the existence of that visible light was….. BLACK LIGHTNING!!

Where did you ride your Cannondale today?

Great photos once again @kjop ! I need to stop working on bikes and go for a ride!

    Cannondale History

Bizarre looking "thing" for sure. If I were to guess, I'd say some sort of futuristic concept from an engineering team. For a trade show or something like that.

    Cannondale History

For me it is a new story. One that took place a couple of decades ago. Heckuva gamble to enter the motocross market. Was it poorly executed? I don’t know. I might have to see if I can find the article written about the bike. The author wrote very negatively about the mx400 when it was released...

Yes, I look at my Prophet and wonder if I’m up to the task of servicing the lefty. Mechanical ability? Probably. But tooling? No. I’m thinking of sending it off to Mendon cycles this winter.

@JohnnyD I let the cat out of the bag. I showed my wife pics of what the frame looks like now and what it looked like in the catalog photo. She’s a very understanding enabler of my addictions…err..supportive of my hobbies. I always include her in my Cannondale collecting; the R300 is for her.

Thanks @JohnnyD (nice pun! F.A.R.). It is currently in the stand for a clean-n-lube. Then I’ll see what the RD needs. It was ratcheting toward the chain ring while pedaling about a half inch or so. As far as number 7 goes….I don’t want to spoil it. But I did buy a frame. Good thing I can...

    Mavic MTB tribute

I had to go look in the catalog to see what the Mavic and Zoot look like. Blue is my favorite color, so I like the Zoot tribute idea. But that Mavic being such a loud yellow sure would “pop”. I’d enjoy reading about either build. What’s your plan for decals?

Uhhh….nevermind about the tire size. The rear had 20 p.s.i. and the front had less than that. Combined with the color of the sidewall, maybe it was an optical illusion. Or not. I earn a living eyeball inspecting stuff that flies 6 miles in the sky. I catch these things (Ripley’s believe it or...

It is nice. The smaller tires just don’t look right in my eyes though. It cost a single Ben Franklin.

I’m not an expert in judging used bikes. But my first look at the rear cogs told my brain there wasn’t many miles pedaled. It was one of my triggers that told me that I must have this bike. Downtube shifters take me back in time to my youth. Ahh, the nostalgia….

I have added another Cannondale. I was just going to go look at it. The color and vintage initiated my ”need” to look. It turned out to be in good enough condition for me and a deal was made. It’s a 1995 R300, 58cm, in a nice looking dark metallic green. First impression was that it was...

    R400

The only 105 crank that matches the same dimensions as the Sora that's installed is the 1057. That was my interpretation of the Shimano chart I found on Sheldon Brown's site. I found one on the bay, but it is part of a bigger set. And a bit more than I want to spend.
