    1988 SM600

I put a second coat of clear coat on yesterday after letting the first coat cure about a month. Prior to that I did a light smoothing with 1000 wet/dry prior to the second layer of Duplicolor Hi-Gloss clear coat 1K. Interestingly, it’s nice and glossy in some places and matte in some others...

    SM600?

I found the exact freewheel on eBay, just finished painting and putting decals on. Now replacing wheel bearings. Mine had a gloss black stem that looks stock, which I kind of like, but may go back to the red seat and stem at some point, but the red stem/seat is less than understated for my taste.

    1988 SM600

This is the status of the frame now, after painting and decals. I’m debating whether to put another layer of clear coat over the decals. PS - I purchased replacement decals from egovinyls on eBay. Extremely helpful and the decals are identical to stock, made of thick high quality material...

    1988 SM600

Update: after several failed stops and starts where I tried to just sand out scratches, I decided to strip the frame down to bare metal. Primer kept bubbling up at the edges where the original paint interfaced with bare metal so I just started over, and I’m pretty happy with the efforts. I...

    1988 SM600

Okay, so it starts… Stripped down to the frame Time for some cleaning and judicious wet/dry sanding of scratches. Planning on using gloss black rustoleum enamel and wet sanding between multiple coats to fill in the scratches. I’m going to try to avoid disturbing the original stickers unless...

    SM600?

I thought the same thing and just bought a new chain yesterday. The play on the RDR is fine but I got a couple of replacement jockey wheels out of my local ship’s parts box. We’ll see if that makes a difference. I’m gonna clean them up but don’t want to remove the finish. I appreciate the offer!

    Part cleaning recommendations

I used to use gunk, a wire brush and a garden hose. I’m wondering if simple green vs an ultrasonic cleaner might be better options. If folks have been using the latter, any recs on a reasonable ultrasonic cleaner out there? Thanks!

To restore or not? 1988 SM600

I found a few freewheels on eBay. This is the closest. https://ebay.us/m/pXsOFs Stock was 14-30, this is 14-28. I’ve decided to go ahead and do a full restoration to get as close to stock as possible. I’ll be painting tomorrow. I was lucky enough to find NOS shifters on eBay, and will try to...

To restore or not? 1988 SM600

Thanks - much appreciated. I’m struggling with trying to stay stock vs upgrading… this helps.

To restore or not? 1988 SM600

This was my wife’s bike in college, she got it from the original owner, and my kid needs a bike for college now. It’s 80% stock, missing the original shifters, red seat, pedals and red cable sheaths. Frame is straight but a lot of the paint has been scratched off from locking it to...

    SM600?

Agree, that’s the conclusion I’ve reached too. The wheels, derailleurs, brake are all stock, frame is straight and original paint. But I think a lot of it was left at various bike racks and railing in San Luis Obispo. I’m tempted to restore with the original shifters and red cable sheaths but...

    SM600?

The frame number is 18031788111, but I can’t figure out what it is. Looking at the catalogs, the Suntour XCD derailleurs make it look like a 1989 SM 600. This is the bike my wife rode in college in the early 1990s and I’m fixing it up for my son to take to college. I’d like to update the...
