1999 was the first year for CAAD4. CAAD5 was introduced in 2001 for the top three models only, the rest (R1000 and below) were CAAD4. The R500 was still CAAD4 in 2004. That was the last CAAD4 standard road frame. I have a 1999 R4000 in Team Blue.
Hi Black Lightning 1987, thank you ever so much for your reply. Nearly bought a "so-called 2006 CAAD4" road bike by being ill informed. Here is a pic of my CAAD4 Tandem.
Perhaps the seller of the road bike purchased it in 2006 and assumed it was a current model. CAAD4 frames had the hourglass shaped seat stays and a conventional headset with external cups. Early CAAD4s had threaded forks but later ones had threadless.
The tandem frames were simply called Road Tandem or Mountain Tandem. I don't think they ever had a specific CAAD number. Looks like a nice bike. Did you change the fork? Road tandems with cantilever brakes generally came with a steel fork that had rack bosses. Your frame appears to have a disc mount so perhaps came with a disc fork also. I would check with the fork manufacturer to be sure the carbon fork is rated for the weight of a tandem.
I've double checked my tandem now, it is marked CAAD technology on the front side of the front seat down-tube. You are correct, there is no CAAD number. The bike is in a very good condition. I bought it second hand (very low mileage) way back in 2008. Have not done more than 5 to 6k miles in total. It's been sitting in my garage since 2010. I have not changed the fork but will most definately check with our local suppliers re safety issues. You are spot on re the disc brake mount, pic attached. I think the previous owner chose the canti brakes to save a bit on costs?
Hard to say about the brakes. The choice may have been dictated by the lack of a disc mount on the fork. It's usually cheaper to buy a full set rather than a different type for each end of the bike.
I'm guessing the bike wasn't very old when you bought it. I think the tandem frames still had canti bosses in 2004 even though the complete bikes came with disc brakes. That's about the time when FSA cranks started showing up in large numbers as well.
What is the rear rim? I don't recognize the label.
