Pretty sure it's been repainted. I only recall two/three color fades on tandems in a few years, mostly 2000 and later. For example, there was orange/red/black on the MT4000 in 2000 and blue/blue/white (Ice fade) on the 2002 RT3000.
Someone liked to bomb the downhills with that ring.

I guess it says “available in black, red or teal” in the catalog. Someone replaced the decals at some point then.
Is 89’ the first year then? Do not see it in any others catalogs prior.

Have you checked your serial number? It would be pretty cool to have a first year tandem.

Hugi wheelset, drivetrain measures new, Salsa stem.....it’s as if I built it myself.
23"/21" frame, the 15th built in May, 1989. I would have thought that there would be a 5 or a 0 ahead of that number to indicate dropout spacing.

That’s what is confusing.
How many could they possible have made? Can’t me many.
There seem to be quite a few tandems out there but I've never checked the serial numbers of any I've seen. Friend has an older one. I'll have to see if I can read it. At any rate, I'd surely think that 1989 would be the rarest year.
