The problem is, the shocks on that particular vintage of Cannondales were pull shocks, not the usual push, and very few other manufacturers made that decision. Thus, the selection isn't great, and replacing it with something else would require a complete re-engineering of the suspension linkages.

Decent full-suspension mountain bike, if you can find the rear shock and a fork for it. Probably used a Headshok; I don't know if they offered it with the Lefty.

You'll have to measure the axle itself. 68mm is the width of the bottom bracket shell. The axle itself will probably be 100mm or more - I've seen them up to 113mm. It all depends on the bottom bracket, double/triple chainrings, chainline, etc.
