Its been 30 years since I've ridden and within 2 weeks I've picked up 2 used Cannondale to help ease me back into cycling. I am able to identify my first Cannondale, 2013 Trail XL 29er, I've tried everything to identify my second and nothing. Looks to be mid 80's but nothing seems to match anything else I've seen in my research.

I don't know if there is any ettiqutte for a first post or not, I'm just a genuinely curious person and this seems the best place to get the info I crave

Pretty sure it's been repainted. 26" wheels front and rear? Have a look for the serial number on the underside of chainstay or seatstay. 6 speed XT? Model number on the crank? Dia-Compe U brakes front and rear? That's unusual, front cantilever and rear U brake was the usual setup.

26 front, 24 rear. Serial number 20041488042 so figured 20" frame (I measured 18.5") built Apr 14, 1987. Its the CANNONDALE font that threw me off.

Looks to be a 1988 model, the 42nd frame produced on April 14th. Beyond that the components will be the best clues to fix the model. I believe that the only 1988 24"/26" model was the SM600. Check out the 1988 catalog and see if any of your components are a match.

Sorry, 20041487042, so 87.

Will check out components to see what matches up from around that time.
So this is what I got.

Started tearing everything down.

Looks to be 87 SM600.

Has been resprayed, but done well, CANNONDALE is hand painted, old paint was completely stripped but found 2 spots where there is hot pink, was this only on the SM800?
Looks like a mish-mash of components but mostly Shimano, so thinking SM600.

Debating whether to repaint pink or leave as is, could it have been a factory custom paint job?

Oh well, at least I have a basic idea what I have :)

Does it have the Sugino crank or Shimano? I think the pink only appeared on 1987 frames and wasn't used again until after Simoni won the Giro for Saeco team in 2003. To me it's the iconic color for 1987 Cannondales. Someone in the marketing department must have liked it because pink bikes appear in the 1988 and 1989 catalogs even though the color was no longer used. My guess is that your bike was originally an SM800 but you could rebuild it to any model you choose as the frames differ only in paint, at least the upper models. SM800 would have had the better (chrome-moly) Tange fork which also came on the SM900. I don't know how to tell the forks apart but Brian may. I think he has reproduction decals in the works for 1987 frames.
