Do you think the chamfer on the IS-3I is to small to work? I think the fork came from a 2003 R3000. They dropped the SI from the model name that year. I have a 2002 R3000SI. I can pull the fork if seeing the crown race is going to help.

The bottom of the IS-3I race does have a chamfer. It appears to be 45 degree and about 2 mm wide.

Do you have the frame and the rest of the headset? The SI frames used 36/45 degree bearings. Since the crown race only contacts the bearing on the bevel, I would think any 1 1/8" crown race with the correct angle would work. FSA, Cane Creek and others made these headsets. Lots of Cannondales...

Do you have a local bike co-op? Perhaps a pair of dual pivot calipers would improve the braking. Used Sora/Tiagra/105/Tektro shouldn't cost much. I can spare a new pair of Sora or Tiagra from the 9 speed era.

Price of Shimano STI has always steered me towards other options like bar end shifters and Campagnolo.

I like the bike and it would be great to add another model to my 1987 collection. But it's hard to justify purchasing a bike that's too small for me to ride.

Those Dia Compe levers are designed for time trial bikes so I would think they should work with most any side pull caliper. What calipers are on the bike?

Easy to tell if it's an R700, just check the angles. The lack of a model decal makes me lean toward a replacement frame or frameset.

If you have the external cup British threaded bottom bracket it should work. The only issue I can think of is if the small ring is a much different size than the original 42 there might be a chainstay clearance issue. Hard to know for sure until you try it.

It's an older 2.8 or 3.0 frame with late 90s decals. The CAAD designations came about after the 2.8/3.0 frames.
