I don't tour myself but have been hosting tourists for years as a warmshowers member. I've hosted cyclists from numerous European countries, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and Australia. I'd like to tour at some point but never seem to want to take time off from the farm in favorable weather.

Check the two letter code for the year and month that the frame was produced (see the serial number page for information). Some 1999 model year frames would have been produced in 1998. If your paint and decals match the 1999 catalog description you can be fairly certain of the model year...

There are lots of decals listed on eBay but most have the newer head tube decal. This set for a Super V would at least get you 1999 style head tube, down tube, and made in USA decals. Is your bike definitely a 1999 model? No R900 shows in either of our 1999 USA catalogs, or the 2000 catalog...

Thanks for the photos. We lost a historic oak tree locally when the "Witness Tree" was taken down. Said to be 250 years old, it was used as a surveying point for the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad when it came through the area in the early 1850s.

My 1992 R1000 is 1". I was thinking your stem might work for SirRidealot with a quill adapter. The Control Tech stem you listed is for a 1 1/8" fork, the quill OD is 1". I've never heard of anyone using a shim with a quill stem but it might be possible.

I would have thought that the geographic center of the USA would be pretty indisputable. Good to have a tailwind on a 93 degree day.

Welcome. That SR400 looks to be in great shape for its age and all original as far as I can tell. Try some lacquer thinner on a rag to clean up the brake hoods. Super V looks nice too. Wish I could find a good deal on one locally.

I have some new rear Cannondale rear racks in the attic. Purchased from Bikewagon about 10 years ago. I should have one on a bike somewhere but don't remember what bike. Will look for one.

At least it's a pretty generic font. A facsimile shouldn't be too hard to reproduce. If you do it you should make a bunch of them.
