So i had difficulties screwing in the new bottom bracket. The frame was sandblasted and the bottom bracket threads do not look as shiny as they used to. BSA, right? Probably need to tap the thread to clean it. Or just a steel wire brush?

Widest tire in early 1991 MTB?

Successfully installed a 2.3 slick tire.

    New Crankset for CAAD 5

I think with a BSA 68-73 BB you can actually fit anything “modern”. Some new frames are even reverting back to this standard abandoning pressed-in BB.

Widest tire in early 1991 MTB?

That’s very helpful. Yes, 2.25 looks like the limit, but the difference to 2.3 is roughly one mm. I will have to check if the clearance with the older, round chain stays Is less.

Widest tire in early 1991 MTB?

Thanks. I thought it should be possible since a 2.3 is less than 60 mm, but I am very curious about what you find out. Unfortunately that is currently all I have right now.

Widest tire in early 1991 MTB?

You mean the limitations were the brakes not the clearance of the frame and fork?

    New Crankset for CAAD 5

The modern SRAM roadcranks (Force or Red) with the 8 bolts let you do pretty much anything. Get various spiders or direct mounted chainwheels, powermeters etc. Bottom bracket in DUB is available for BSA 68-73 what should fit your frame.

Widest tire in early 1991 MTB?

What is the widest 26’ tire you have squeezed into an early 90ies Cannondale MTB? Aluminum 3.0 Series / Pepperoni fork

Now, on to decals and clear coating. I want to turn this into a "off road" Seaco version from the 90ies. Any views? I will add the Aluminum 3.0 stickers instead of "CAAD", because that is what the frame is, same on the fork, and the original stickers on the seat tube. Should I use the "true...

Very happy with the prepared frame. Have to figure out what to do with the "old" one.

This is making progress and over the holidays I will repaint the frame in retro Saeco style like this caad13 frame. I know this is inaccurate but should look super.

Is there a safe way to rescue the old cable guides?

And here is a test assembly with a dummy stem (too short). Spacers missing. Might revert to a mini expander.

So it took a while to receive the other 18 inch frame. Looks very encouraging, already adjusted the derailleur hanger and the set up with an ahead conversion looks also very good. Now on to preparing and painting the frame and fork. The frame seems to be in a better condition than the red one...

More than happy to buy one set of guides. Thank you very much.

I am not planning to cut the fork. I plan to use the excess part of the fork shaft for clamping on an aheadset stem (probably with a 1 in to 1 1/8 in shim). The height of a stem is typically 4 cm, if there is excess length I will add a spacer under the stem. But let’s see. I heave not found any...

    1990 SM400

So my project has taken an unexpected turn. Found this frame, essentialily the same 3.0 version, built 6 months earlier, also 130mm dropouts, BUT: 18 inch. My current one, 20 inch, was on the bigger side for me. One goodie I hope for: the head tube is much shorter, so my existing Pepperoni fork...
