How is the clearance in front compared to rear? On the aluminum fork models you could probably fit a bigger tire on the front than on the rear. That is also true with my 2010 CAAD8 CX (carbon fork) but I haven't owned one of similar vintage to yours.

Looking good and very racy with the handlebar so low. Did you find some 8 speed shifters or are you going back to the original 7 speed? My experience is that 7 speed are much easier to find.

The touring bikes in the mid 1990s came with tires as wide as 38 mm. My guess is that some models of 40 mm tires might fit but I'd feel safer recommending 38s. Let us know if you try 40s. I'm running 33ish tires on a couple of older Cannondale touring frames for gravel and get along fine...

Your guess sounds likely. It can't be a 1997 model as 1996 was the last year for the 2.8 frames. If lower end, it would have come with an AL fork. The R600 and above had carbon forks. Great looking bike and Ultegra 6503 is nice stuff.

Are you referring to XR800/Cyclocross models? I think that I have 35 mm tires on one of mine. I will try to check the width and clearance tonight.

Interesting bike. You might check the serial number for build date. If you have the "version 2" serial number it will also give you the dropout spacing. In 1991, Ultegra was 7 speed and only down tube shifters were available. In 1992 it changed to 8 speed and STI was available. Your frame...
